A bilingual publication entitled ‘Treaties and Undertakings in force between the British Government and the Shaikh of Mohammerah 1899-1919’. This publication bears the printing statement ‘CALCUTTA [Kolkata] SUPERINTENDENT GOVERNMENT PRINTING, INDIA 1919’. A stamp on the front cover indicates that this copy of the publication was enclosed in letter No. 98 from the Foreign Secretary of the Government of India to the Secretary of State for India dated 18 December 1919, and was received at the India Office on 20 January 1920.

The publication consists of four parts:

‘I. Assurances given to His Excellency Shaikh Khazal Khan [Shaikh Khaz‘al bin Jābir al-Kaʾbī], Shaikh of Mohammerah [Khorramshahr], by the British Government’, consisting of correspondence between the Shaikh of Mohammerah, HM Minister in Teheran [Tehran], and the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, dated between 13 November 1899 and 21 November 1919

‘II. Declarations and Undertakings by the Shaikh of Mohammerah in connection with leasing of land and irrigation’, dated between 15 May 1909 and 7 February 1914

‘III. Farmans [edicts] granted to His Excellency Shaikh Sir Khazal Khan, Shaikh of Mohammerah, by H[is]. I[mperial]. M[ajesty]. Mozaffar-ed-Din, Late Shah of Persia’ [Muẓaffar al-Dīn Shāh Qājār, Shāh of Iran], dated between June 1902 and January 1903

‘IV. Appendices’, containing copies of:

• Agreements between the Shaikh of Mohammerah and the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, dated 16 July 1909, 7 December 1914, and 3 September 1918
• The Concession for the exploration, exploitation, and development of oil and gas in Persia granted by HIM the Shah to William Knox D’Arcy, dated 28 May 1901
• Undertakings by Nizam-es-Sultanah [Rezā Qulī Niẓām al-Salṭanah] and the Sheikh of Mohammerah concerning railway construction, dated between 5 January and 13 March 1912
• The text of the address delivered by Major-General George MacMunn, Inspector-General of Communications for the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force, on the occasion of the presentation of the title of Knight Grand Commander of the Indian Empire (KGCIE) to the Shaikh of Mohammerah on 10 December 1917, and the Shaikh’s reply.

The texts contained in the publication are printed in both English and Farsi (Arabic in the case of Appendix IV) with the exception of Appendix III(b), the English text of which does not correspond to the Farsi or the text described in the contents page. English copies begin at the start of the publication (f 1); Farsi copies begin at the rear (f 50).
