This item consists of copies of correspondence, minutes and resolutions cited in, or enclosed with, letters from the Government of Bombay [Mumbai]. It concerns the transmission of news about the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo from Bussora [Basra] to Bombay. The primary subjects are:
- The difficulties experienced by Johanness Tergasper [Hovhannes Ter Gaspar], the Native Broker at Bussora, in finding a ship willing to leave immediately to convey to Bombay the packets containing the news of Napoleon’s defeat
- The consideration by Henry Meriton, Superintendent of Marine, of the claim by Captain Williams of the Durable for remuneration for losses due to freight foregone as a result of having agreed to convey the packets containing the news of Napoleon’s defeat to Bombay.
