‘Execution of Court’s orders directing the abolition of the Agency establishment at Mocha, suspended on the recommendation of the Supreme Government.’

Scope & Content:

This item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence and minutes cited in, or enclosed with, letters to and from the governments of Bengal and Bombay [Mumbai].

The item relates to the question of maintaining a Political Agent at Mocha. The East India Company Court of Directors expresses its opinion that, due to the failure to develop trade with Abyssinia [Ethiopia] and of the costs of procuring coffee from Mocha, maintaining a Political Agent in that port is not justified. In response, the Government of Bombay presents arguments in favour of keeping a Political Agent, and discusses how coffee might be procured on more advantageous terms.

The title page (f 47) of the item contains the following references: ‘Bombay Political No.3, 1817/18, Draft 127’ and ‘Examiner’s Office, March 1817’.
