This item consists of copies of political letters from the Government of Bombay. It is the first in a series of eight items on affairs of the Persian Gulph [Gulf] (the others are IOR/F/4/988/27715*, IOR/F/4/989/27716* and 27717*, IOR/F/4/990/27718* and 27719*, and IOR/F/4/27720* and 27721*). The item principally concerns disputes between different parties in the Persian Gulph, including:
- Between the Imaum [Imam] of Muscat [Sayyid Sa‘īd bin Sulṭān Āl Bū Sa‘īd] and Sultan bin Sugger [Shaikh Sulṭān I bin Ṣaqr al-Qāsimī, ruler of Ra's al-Khaymah and Sharjah] and their respective allies over the fortifications at Brymee [Al Buraymī] and Derrah [Deira]
- Between Rama bin Jaber [Shaikh Raḥmah bin Jābir Āl Jalāhimah] and Abdoolla bin Ahmed [Shaikh ‘Abdullāh bin Aḥmad Āl Khalīfah], Sheikh of Bahrein [Shaikh of Bahrain]
- Between Abdoola bin Ahmed and the tribes of Bahrein
- Between Abdoola bin Ahmed and Tahnoon bin Shakboot [Shaikh Tahnun bin Shakhbut Āl Nahyān of Abu Dhabi]
- Between Rama bin Jaber and some boats from Katiffe [Qatif]
- Between the Imaum of Muscat and Abdul Russool Khan, Sheikh of Bushire [‘Abd al-Rasūl Khān Āl Mazkūr, Shaikh of Būshehr], and the subsequent unrest in Bushire.
The item also concerns the strength of the states in the Persian Gulph, including the strength of the Wahabees [Wahabi]; piracy, especially in relation to Sultan bin Sugger; the death of Rama bin Jaber; the resignation of Ephraim Gerrish Stannus as British Resident in the Persian Gulf and the appointment of Captain David Wilson as his replacement.
