This item consists primarily of copies of correspondence, minutes and resolutions cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay. It is the third in a series of eight items on affairs of the Persian Gulph [Gulf] (the others are IOR/F/4/988/27714* and 27715*, IOR/F/4/989/27717*, IOR/F/4/990/27718* and 27719*, and IOR/F/4/27720* and 27721*). The main correspondents are the Government of Bombay; Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Political Resident in the Persian Gulph; and Sooltan bin Sugger [Shaikh Sulṭān I bin Ṣaqr al-Qāsimī, ruler of Ra's al-Khaymah and Sharjah].
The item concerns:
- The actions of Sooltan bin Sugger including possible acts of piracy
- The war between Tannoon [Shaikh Tahnun bin Shakhbut Āl Nahyān] and Mahomed bin Shakhboot [Muḥammad bin Shakhbut Āl Nahyān] over Aboothabee [Abu Dhabi]
- A dispute between the rulers of Sharga [Sharjah] and Debaye [Dubai] over seizure of boats
- A dispute which occurred when the tribe of Sourdan [Sudan] tried to leave Sharga
- An earthquake at Shiraz and its aftermath
