This item consists primarily of copies of correspondence, minutes and resolutions cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay. It is the fourth in a series of eight items on affairs of the Persian Gulph [Gulf] (the others are IOR/F/4/988/27714* and 27715*, IOR/F/4/989/27716*, IOR/F/4/990/27718* and 27719*, and IOR/F/4/27720* and 27721*). The main correspondents are the Government of Bombay; Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident in the Persian Gulph; Henry Meriton, Superintendent of the Marine; Sooltan bin Suggur [Shaikh Sulṭān I bin Ṣaqr al-Qāsimī, ruler of Ra's al-Khaymah and Sharjah]; the Imaum of Muscat [Imam of Muscat, Sayyid Sa‘īd bin Sulṭān Āl Bū Sa‘īd].
The item concerns:
- The Imaum of Muscat’s request for assistance in building a ship
- Stannus’s attempts to effect reconciliations between the factions supporting the Imaum of Muscat, particularly Tannoon [Shaikh Tahnun bin Shakhbut Āl Nahyān], and those allied with bin Suggur over fortifications at Brymee [Al-Buraymī] and Derah [Deira]
- Piracy in the Gulf and Stannus’s inquiries into individual incidents
- The tribe of Soodan [Sudan] leaving bin Suggur’s territory without his permission

- Relations between Mahomed bin Ali [Muḥammad bin ‘Alī Jaylanī], chief of the Beni Boo Ali [Banī Bū ‘Alī tribe], and the Imaum of Muscat
- Relations between the Shaikh of Bushire, Abdul Rassool Khan [Shaikh of Bushēhr, ‘Abd al-Rasūl Khān Āl Mazkūr] and the Prince of Shiraz [Ḥusayn ‘Alī Mirzā Farmānfarmā].
