Government of Bengal to Court of Directors enclosing documents relating to botanical establishments. [ff 13-69] Extract Public Letter from Bengal, 1 July 1828, of report dated 1 December 1827 by John Forbes Royle on the Botanic Garden at Saharanpur. Summarises measures taken for garden's improvement: cleared garden of jungle and planted a double-hedge; dug tank for water plants; divided garden into compartments (horticultural experiments / nurseries); received seeds from England for distribution; descriptions of new plants which Royle has compared with descriptions given by well-known authors; tried to introduce useful plants from other countries. At folio 42v lists plants introduced from Asia to America and from America to India. Plants from China, such as lychee and peach, now introduced into garden and thriving. Royle requests library of books to facilitate his researches [itemises works at ff 52-54]. Requests increase in salary. [ff 70-74] Chief Secretary to Government of Bengal to Nathaniel Wallich, Superintendent of Calcutta Botanic Garden, partially granting the requests. [ff 83-101] Correspondence from Plantation Committee to Secretary to Government of Bengal, proposing creation of a Committee of Forests. [ff 101-125] Correspondence between Nathaniel Wallich and James Craigie, Secretary to the Military Board, re a species of wood, Golpara Geea or ebony; Wallich proposes investigation of little-known timbers in order to sustain military supplies - suggests that officer at Garden be dedicated to task. [ff 129-148] Correspondence between Nathaniel Wallich and Secretary to Government of Bengal and Secretary to the Horticultural and Agricultural Society, re transfer of gardens at Poosah, formerly owned by Stud Department, to the Society. [ff 149-56] Correspondence between Government of Bengal and Calcutta Botanic Garden re Garden's failure to support boys from Military Orphan Society (James Haddis, Charles Macleod and John William Linton) after their apprenticeship ended - recommendation that management be ‘more circumspect’ in employing children in future; [ff 165-69] correspondence between Nathaniel Wallich as Secretary of Plantation Committee and Collector of Nuddea, re care of sissoo and teak plantations.
