The collection consists of the following papers regarding dye produced from a species of redwood tree found in Tavoy and Mergui in Burma:
Note by George Swinton, Chief Secretary to the Government of Bengal, dated 28th November 1831, enclosing a letter from Thomas Speir, a silk printer of Calcutta, dated 26th November 1831, reporting on the result of experiments made with the Mergui redwood.
Letter from George Swinton, Chief Secretary to the Government of Bengal, Political Department, to P Auber, Secretary to the Court of Directors, dated Fort William 2nd December 1831, regarding transmitting a copy of his Note, with specimens of dyed silk and pieces of redwood, with a view to some experiments being tried out in England for the purposes of ascertaining whether the dye would answer as an article of commerce on the London market.
Letter from Thomas Cleeve, Private Trade Warehouse, to W Simons, dated 7th August 1832, forwarding the opinion of competent persons who had examined the sample of Mergui redwood received at the Baggage Warehouse by the Thomas Grenville from Bengal.
Minute of a meeting of the Committee of Buying and Warehouses on Wednesday the 9th January 1833.
