[pp 1-2] Extract from Revenue letters from Bombay, dated 2nd March (No.5) 1836, regarding an Indian charka and foot roller used for cleaning cotton forwarded by the Bombay Government to London, and Egyptian cotton seed and an Egyptian machine for cleaning cotton to be sent to Bombay.
[pp 3-4] Letter from E H Townsend, Acting Secretary to Government, to Peter Auber, Secretary at East India House, London, dated Bombay Castle 5th April 1836, regarding forwarding machines for cleaning cotton.
[pp 5-13] Letter from the Revenue Department (No.2), dated London 4th March 1835, to the Governor in Council at Bombay, regarding sales in London of the cotton produced at the experimental cotton farms in Guzerat [Gujarat], the Southern Mahratta Country and Broach; and the effect on the quality of the cotton by the operation of the American and Indian machines for cleaning the cotton.
[pp 15-17] Letter from the Revenue Department (No.3), dated London 20th March 1835, to the Governor in Council at Bombay, regarding furnishing the Government of Bombay with a renewed supply of the seeds of the best kinds of cotton which were cultivated in South America, and of the intention to obtain specimens of the machines used in the Brazils for separating the cotton from the seeds. Have requested that Her Majesty's Consul in Egypt send seeds of Egyptian cotton to the Bombay Government; and a specimen of the machine used by Egyptian cultivators to clean their cotton will also be sent to Bombay.
[pp 19-20] Letter from L R Reid, Secretary to Government, to Dr Charles Lush, dated Bombay Castle 23rd August 1835, requesting him to procure and send to the Presidency a common foot roller, such as was used in the Southern Mahratha Country, for cleaning cotton, and to give an explanatory account of the mode of using it.
[pp 21-25] Letter from Dr Charles Lush, Superintendent of the Botanical Garden at Dapuri, to C H Townsend, Acting Secretary to Government, dated 4th December 1835, giving observations on the subject of separating the seed from cotton, sometimes called cleaning cotton.
[p 27] Drawings of a Southern Maratha foot roller, a Madras charka and a Gujarat charka, enclosed with Dr Lush's letter of the 4th December 1835.
