Paper by Dr John Forbes Royle on the advantages and practicability of cultivating hemp [cannabis sativa] in India with a view to the supply of that article to meet the large demand existing in Great Britain: importance to British Naval and Merchant shipping of hemp in the manufacture of ropes and sails; previous investigation into the cordage plants of India by Dr Roxburgh; commercial potential of different types of cordage plants; cultivation of hemp in other European countries, particularly Russia and Italy; hemp traditionally grown in India for the purpose of yielding Bhang; comparison between growing hemp, flax and jute; describes the parts of India where hemp is grown or can be found in the wild (Dehra Dun, the Khadir land of the Saharanpur District, along the upper part of the Doab Canal, Malabar); its use in the Himalayas both in the preparation of an intoxicating drug and for making cloth and ropes; suggestion for establishing an experimental hemp plantation in the Saharanpur Botanic Garden.
