Griffith recounts his expedition with Lieutenant Vitel and Mr Brownlow to the forests where the rubber tree is found and findings. Introduces reader to the features of the forest, including sweet chestnuts, alder and artocarpus chaplaska, proceeds to comprehensive description of the rubber tree including size, physical description, geographical locations and abundance of the tree there, the interest in the tree initiated by Dr Roxburgh and Mr Matthew Richard Smith of Sylhet, the way the tree grows, the flower and fruit, the milky juice of the fiscus elastica [Rubber Tree].
In reference to the juice, there is discussion and instruction regarding: extraction; comparison of the tree found in Assam with that in South America and the opinions of Mr Smith, Mr Bell, Mr McCosh and Dr O’Shaughnessy; properties of the milky juice of the fiscus elastica [Rubber Tree]; taking cuttings and planting methods; other similar plant families and trees and the opinions of others including Baron Humboldt, Dr Lindley, Mr Royle, Dr Anderson, Professor Selden; its value as a ‘new product’; Griffith’s own opinion about bottling it; and the detailed scientific findings of Mr Scott’s experiments. Handwriting is often difficult to read. Additions have been noted in the margins. Ink drawing of a cut specimen of the 'Ficus elastica Roxburgh' on last page numbered 29. Paper bears watermark ‘W. Venables & Co. 1838’.
