[One un-numbered page] Extract from Public letter to Bengal, No.36, dated 25th September 1839, giving approval to the letter from the Government of Bengal, No.19, dated 18th October 1837.
[Seven un-numbered pages] Letter from the Public Department to the Government of Bengal, No.31, dated London 21 August 1839, regarding the report by Dr Wallich, Superintendent of the Calcutta Botanic Garden, on the practical benefits of that Institution, and the delay in sending the report to London.
[pp 7-48] Papers regarding appointments of Mr McCulloch to the situation of Superintendent of the Government Botanic Gardens under the Bombay Presidency, and Dr Gibson to the charge of forming the Nursery Garden at Nurgerree [Nirgiri] and to the situation of Superintendent of the District Nursery Gardens proposed to be formed under the Bombay Presidency, June 1837 to May 1838. The papers include a report from the Committee appointed to select the site of an experimental Garden (pp 12-18); a letter from Dr Gibson to A Graham, President of the Garden Committee, dated 5th June 1837, regarding the site for the experimental garden (pp 19-24); a Minute by R Grant, Governor of Bombay, dated 2nd September 1837, proposing to establish district nurseries in each Collectorate of the Bombay Presidency under the supervision of Dr Gibson (pp 24-30); Letter from Thomas Williamson, Revenue Commissioner, to the Secretary to the Government of Bombay, dated 24th March 1838, on the proposed appointments of Mr McCulloch and Dr Gibson, and the formation of Nursery Gardens at Neergooree and other suitable places under the Bombay Presidency (pp 35-39); a report by Dr Gibson, dated 6th March 1838, on his progress since commencing garden operations in October 1837 (pp 41-47); and a letter from H T Prinsep, Acting Chief Secretary to the Government of India, General Department, to L R Reid, Acting Chief Secretary to the Government of Bombay, dated 16th May 1838, stating the President in Council's decision to decline to sanction the proposal of the Bombay Government to establish nursery gardens throughout the Bombay Presidency (pp 47-48).
