Extract from Revenue General letter from Madras, No.4, dated 23rd February 1838, regarding two shipments of Cassia from Canara [Kanara], and correspondence which had taken place with the Government of Ceylon and the local officers on the Malabar Coast as well as with Surgeon R Wight as to the difference existing between cassia and cinnamon.
Letter from the Government of Madras, Revenue Department, to James Cosmo Mellvill, Secretary at the India House, No.17 of 1839, dated Fort St George 25th February 1839, transmitting a copy of the correspondence regarding the enquiries of the Government of Ceylon respecting the difference existing between cinnamon and cassia and the result of Surgeon R Wight's investigations on that subject.
[pp 3-6] Correspondence regarding two shipments of cassia from ports in Canara, which landed at Quilon, and was then shipped to London to be sold as Malabar cinnamon, June 1837.
[pp 7-18] Letter from P Wodehouse, Assistant Colonial Secretary, to the Chief Secretary, Madras, dated 7th October 1837, regarding the distinction between cassia and cinnamon, and enclosing an extract of a letter on the subject from Dr Christison, Professor of Materia Medica at the University of Edinburgh, to Colonel Walker, Deputy Adjutant General, Ceylon. Also includes a copy of the Resolution of Government.
[pp 19-80] Further correspondence regarding the difference between cassia and cinnamon, November 1837 to March 1838. The correspondence includes a letter from Robert Wight to the Chief Secretary to the Madras Government, dated 20th November 1837 (pp 19-24); and a letter from Thomas Crawford, Master Attendant and Custom Master, to Colonel Fraser, Resident in Travancore and Cochin, dated Quilon 6th December 1837, enclosing extracts from various reference books as to the difference between cassia and cinnamon (pp 31-49).
