Extracts from Public letters from the Government of India, 31st May to 4th December 1839, on the subject of the interchange of vegetable productions of India and Europe with a view to their naturalisation.
Public Department letter, No.1 of 1839, to the Governor General of India in Council, dated London 13th February 1839, regarding the means of carrying on experiments for naturalising in India useful and desirable plants indigenous in other countries. States that some varieties of seeds have been forwarded to the Superintendent of the Garden at Saharanpur. Have also forwarded some cotton seeds from Naples furnished by Dr Royle. Comments on the collection of seeds in India for transmission to England.
Letter from John Forbes Royle to J C Melvill, Secretary to the Court of Directors of the East India Company, dated 31st December 1838, giving his observations on the subject of the introduction into India of the useful and ornamental plants of Europe.
Letter [from Dr Royle to J C Melvill] regarding seed and specimens of fine cotton grown in Naples for experimental cultivation in India, and recommending that the Spanish Chestnut would be well suited to Northern India and the Himalayas.
Letter from T H Maddock, Officiating Secretary to the Government of India with the Governor General, to H T Prinsep, Secretary to the Government of India, dated the 2nd May 1839, transmitting with observations the despatch from the Court of Directors, No.1 of (13th February) 1839, on the subject of the interchange of vegetable productions with a view to their naturalisation, and the Resolution of the President in Council thereon.
Letter from Henry H George, Secretary to the Agricultural and Horticultural Society, to H T Prinsep, Secretary to the Government of India, General Department, dated the 12th June 1839, stating that the Society proposed to establish a Committee for seeking information to further the objects of the Court of Directors in establishing an interchange between the British Dominions in Asia and Europe of the productions of the vegetable kingdom.
