Extract Public Letter No. 22 of 1841 [to Court of Directors] from the Government of Bengal dated 7 Jun

• with reference to approach of season for growing, took advantage of island of Chusan in China, being at the time in British occupancy,
• to forward a supply of Seed Potatoes and of certain Vegetable Seeds to be experimentally introduced to that island

Extract Bengal Public Proceedings of 9 Dec 1840

• Governor arranges delivery of consignment of seeds to the island of Chusan, containing seeds received from the Agricultural and Horticultural Society, to be delivered to Colonel George Burrell Governor of Chusan.

Ordered that the following letter be addressed to Colonel Burrell –

To Colonel Burrell from G. A. Bushby, Secretary to Government of Bengal General Department, 7 Dec 1840

• informs Burrell than consignment of seeds has been despatched on board the ship ‘Hannah’ to Macao, to be forwarded on to Chusan,
• followed by list of seeds on board ‘Hannah’, as well as list of seeds despatched by ship to Chusan

Orders for delivery of seeds to Colonel Burrell at Chusan via Macao –

• Marine Board requested to engage freight for packages of seeds, on board the ‘Hannah’ bound for Macao, to be delivered to Mr. A. R. Johnstone, Deputy Superintendent of the British Trade in China, Macao,
• who in turn is requested to forward them to Burrell.
