[pp 1-3] Extract of Public letter, No.14 of 1841, from the Government of India, dated the 24th March 1841, regarding naturalising in India useful and desirable plants indigenous in other countries, describing the actions of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of India to collect information on that subject, and commenting on the reported poor state of the roads in the Districts of Shahabad and Gorakhpur.
[pp 5-7] Extract of Public letter, No.1 of 1839, to the Government of India, dated the 13th February 1839, regarding the intention of the Court of Directors of the East India Company to send out seeds and plants to India for the purpose of carrying on experiments for naturalising in India useful and desirable plants indigenous in other countries.
[pp 9-10] Extract of Public letter, No.14 of 1839, to the Government of India, dated the 24th July 1839, regarding a paper prepared by Dr Royle on the advantages and practicability of cultivating hemp in India, and the measures proposed to be taken to extend the knowledge of the productions of India, to increase their amount, improve their quality or give a stimulus to the demand for them.
[pp 11-13] Letter from Henry H Spry, Secretary to the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of India, to G A Bushby, Secretary to Government, General Department, dated 11th July 1840, reporting that at a meeting of the Society on the 8th July 1840 a report from a Special Committee appointed by the Society for promoting the object of Government in regard to the spread of useful plants throughout India was read and confirmed. The following documents, numbered (1) to (4), are enclosed with the letter.
[pp 13- 15] (1) Plans adopted to secure such plants and trees as may be thought desirable for introduction into India, as well as those that can be furnished in return. This was the first report made by the Special Committee to the Society.
[pp 15-17] (2) Circular letter from the Society distributed throughout the Presidencies of Bengal and Agra, Bombay, and Madras inviting information as to what trees and vegetable productions might be suitable for introduction into their neighbourhood, or what may be worthy of extension in India, or be introduced with advantage into the British Colonies or into England.
[pp 17-20] (3) Second Report of the Special Committee to the Society.
[pp 20-21] (4) Resolution passed at a General meeting of the Society on the 8th July 1840 on the motion of the President of the Society, seconded by Dr Wallich.
[pp 21-22] Letter from G A Bushby, Secretary to the Government of India, General Department, to H H Spry, Secretary to the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of India, dated the 22nd July 1840, acknowledging receipt of the papers from the Society, and suggesting that before any papers are published, proof sheets be submitted to Dr Wallich, Dr O'Shaughnessy, and Dr Falconer for their comments.
[pp 23-33] Correspondence regarding the state of the roads in the Districts of Shahabad and Gorakhpur, North Western Provinces, and the application of the 1% Fund in those districts.
