- Custodial History:
-
Origin: Canterbury, Southeastern England.
Provenance:
The cathedral priory of the Holy Trinity or Christ Church, Canterbury: this part of the manuscript originally was part of Royal MS 7 E VI, which contains a martyrology that records the names and death dates of many of its monks and members of its confraternity. The origin of Cotton MS Claudius C VI, ff. 170-204 is further indicated by the contents that relate to Christ Church (see Ker, Medieval Libraries (1964), p. 35). Christ Church produced this part of the manuscript at various stages: 2nd quarter of the 12th century (174r-202r); 2nd half of the 12th century (170v-173r); last quarter of the 12th century (203r-203v).
An unknown 16th-century or later English owner: rendered the name and reference to St Thomas of Canterbury on f. 203r illegible following a ban on his cult by Henry VIII in 1538.
