Origin: ?Leominster, Midlands, England or ?Winchester, Southwestern England.
?The Benedictine abbey of Leominster, founded in the 7th century as a male house and re-founded in the 9th century as a nunnery: suggested by the unique feast of St Æthelmod, whose relics were at Leominster; the rare feast of St David of Wales (‘Deawig’), whose relics were claimed by Leominster; and the feast of ‘Hæmma abbot’, first abbot of Leominster Abbey, found uniquely in the Kalendar and Cotton MS Galba A XIV, with which the manuscript originally was joined; the unique feast of St Germanus and rare feasts of St Petroc and St Colmcille suggest a proximity to the Welsh marches (Hillaby, ‘Leominster and Hereford’ (1995), pp. 6-8; Rushforth, Atlas (2002), p. 26; Smith, The Use of Hereford (2015), pp. 51-52).
?The Benedictine nunnery of St Mary, Winchester, also known as Nunnaminster, founded between 899 and 902: the manuscript was once part of Cotton MS Galba A XIV, which contains a litany with many saints that were venerated at Winchester, a hymn for St Swithun, and received many additions written for a female member of a religious house in the first half of the 11th century (see Ker, Catalogue (1957), pp. 198-201 (no. 157); Muir, Prayer-Book (1988), pp. xiv-xvi); however, since Cotton MS Nero A II, ff. 3-14 does not include feasts for the Winchester saints St Swithun and St Æthelwold and includes four feasts for St Germanus (and feasts for the Cornish saints St Petroc an St Neot) it may also originate from the Benedictine priory of St German at St Germans, Cornwall (see Lapidge, 'Some Latin Poems' (1981), pp. 84-86).
An unknown 16th-century owner: added notes about the Sun's passage through the Zodiac in the year 1593 (ff. 3v, 4v, 5v, 6r, 6v, 7r, 8r, 8v).
