ff. 238v–241r: Chronicle of Battle Abbey to 1206; this version is known as the 'short chronicle'; it has a rubric, 'Incipiunt anni ab Incarnatione Domini' and consists of tables of between three and five columns with dates in Roman numerals from I to MCCXX. The first entry is 'VI Herodes p[er]iit. Archelaus successit'. The last folio (f. 241r) is written in one column and ends at 'MCCVI [1206] Rex Joh[anne]s iiii. f[e]r[ia] Pasch[ae] ad Bellu[m] veniens in curia hospitat[us] [est] et casula[m] decente[m] super magnu[m] altare obtulit.' (f. 241r), though the dates are written up to MCCXX (1220).
The chronicle focuses on world events with a focus on France, listing the succession of archbishops of Rouen, beginning with Gildard (473), the kings of France and the dukes of Normandy. Events in England before the Conquest are very rarely noted, and after 1066 entries are brief. The names of the abbots of Battle are added by a second scribe, who writes the entries towards the end (ff. 240v-241r).
Decoration: Dates in red.
