- Title:
- Cosmographia (Comosgraphy of Aethicus Ister), with Latin and Old English glosses.
- Scope & Content:
-
The Cosmographia (Cosmography of Aethicus Ister) was written in the first part of the 8th century, perhaps at Salzburg. The work purports to be an abbreviation by St Jerome (d. 420) of a cosmography made by an Istrian philosopher named Aethicus. Aethicus relates his travels to islands in the North and East where he meets Amazons and other creatures. Numerous passages deal with the legend of Alexander the Great (d. 323 BC). The author also offers descriptions of natural phenomena such as earthquakes.
Interlinear and marginal Old English glosses appear on ff. 31v, 33v, 34r, 40r. They are nearly contemporary with the text, see: Neil R. Ker, Catalogue of manuscripts containing Anglo-Saxon, 1964, p. 268. Latin glosses also appear throughout the manuscript.
ff. 31r-124: Cosmographia (Cosmography of Aethicus Ister).
