John Clarkson, Lieutenant, Royal Navy, first Governor of Sierra Leone. Fair copy of his journal of his mission to Sierra Leone. Sotheby's sale catalogue, 20 December 1948, lot 178; Maggs, catalogue 785, item 585. The fair copy of the journal of the mission to Nova Scotia and new Brunswick, 1791 - 18 March 1792, was sold in Sotheby's, 10 February 1948, lot 426, and exported by Maggs to Howard University, Washington, DC. One part of the original diary, up to 21 November 1791, is in the Sierra Leone Archives. A large extract, apparently of the original, 5 August - 26 November 1792, was printed in Sierra Leone Studies, viii, March 1927. Bishop Ingham included extracts, not very accurately, some from the missing parts, in his Sierra Leone after a Hundred Years, 1894. See DNB, WR copy
