Letter to Lieutenant Colonel William Casement, Secretary to Government in the Military Department, from J Adam, Secretary to the Medical Board, 23 Feb 1826:
- The letter refers to an earlier letter of 15 Jul 1825, enquiring of the Governor General if a portion of land at the Calcutta Botanical Garden can be used for a Medical Garden.
- Wallich confirms that a portion of land can be set aside, although it will require some extra servants [details and costs given].
- Wallich also states that in order to secure a regular supply of seeds from Europe and other quarters, it will be necessary for him to make some additional arrangements [estimated costs given].
- The Medical Board recommends to the Governor General that Wallich be granted half the money immediately in order to implement the proposed changes, with extra money to follow if and when necessary.
- Both the Board and Wallich suggest the idea of creating small supplementary Medical Gardens. Details of two proposed gardens are given, to be placed under the direction of the Assistant Surgeon Royle, Superintendent of the Seharunpore [Saharanpur] Botanical Garden and the Resident Mr. Gardner respectively.
- If the Government was to grant the money for these extra gardens, the Board predicts the most positive effects for both professional science and the public service.
It was ordered that the following reply be given to the Secretary of the Medical Board [reference to IOR/P/31/48 3 Mar 1826 No. 221].
