Letter to C. Lushington, Chief Secretary to the Government General Department, from Wallich, 12 May 1826

  • relates to proposed botanical expedition of Dr. [George] Govan to the Himalayas
  • in response to earlier letter and enclosures from Lushington, dated 26 Apr 1826, Wallich gives his opinions relating to the proposed expedition
  • Wallich describes the potential significance for botany,
  • also the relation of the plants to their physical geography
  • lists individuals who have already made a contribution in this area
  • discusses Dr. Govan’s qualifications and suitability, including praise from others for his work, eg. the Council of the Royal Society of Edinburgh
  • outlines proposed area of Dr. Govan to survey
  • suggests that Dr. Govan be allowed to access to observations from previous survey(s) and be put in communication with the Superintendent of the Geological Survey
  • Govan should use his own judgment to decide the exact details of duties involved
  • in order to combine the study of botany with geology and physical geography, recommends various instruments, tests, etc. which he should be allowed to employ
  • also recommends supporting staff, eg. draughtsmen
  • suggests samples and plants which could be sent to other places in Hindustan, foreign countries especially Great Britain, etc.
