[p 1] Extract from Revenue letter from Fort St George, dated 9th September (No.38) 1843, transmitting the following correspondence for the information of the Court of Directors of the East India Company.
[pp 3-51] Letter from E C Lovell, Acting Secretary, Revenue Board, Fort St George, to the Acting Chief Secretary to Government, dated 9th March 1843, forwarding correspondence respecting the experimental rice cultivation after the American system carried on by Mr Morris in the Erode Taluk of the Coimbatore District, in comparison to the Indian system of rice cultivation. The correspondence includes letters from Dr Robert Wight, Superintendent of Cotton Farms at Coimbatore, and James Morris, American Cotton Planter at Coimbatore [at pp 13-18], and translated copies of communications from Native residents and planters in the Erode Taluk [at pp 18-30] on the subject.
There is also correspondence on the probable amount of surplus which will remain on hand from the sale of the rice and straw composing the crop raised by Mr Morris at Erode after deducting the charges of cultivation [at pp 31-37], with a statement showing the classification, extent, assessment and settlement of land occupied by Mr Morris for experimental rice collection in Erode [at p 38]; and correspondence regarding the cost and charges of the crop of rice reared by Mr Morris [at pp 39-51].
[pp 53-65] Letter from E C Lovell, Acting Secretary, Revenue Board, Fort St George, to the Chief Secretary to Government, dated 15th June 1843, forwarding a letter from J C Wroughton, Principal Collector, Coimbatore, dated 3rd June 1843, regarding the mode adopted by Mr Morris, American Cotton Planter, in the cultivation of rice contrasted with that pursued by Ryots in the District of Coimbatore.
