-
Contents:
ff. 2v-3r: A genealogy of the barons of Holland accompanies with three obits written into banners. This family tree was certainly commissioned by Joseph Holland, previous owner of this volume as the last banner specifies (f. 3v): 'Joseph Holand, de interiori Templo London, natus apud Weare, in Com' Devoniae, invenit istum librum decimo quinto die Junii Anno Domini 1600 et propter amorem et reverentiam fundatoris preservari procuravit'.
ff. 4r-20v: The Lovell Lectionary (imperfect).
Decoration:
Large miniature in colours of the patron, Lord Lovell (f. 4v). Smaller miniatures or historiated initials with full inhabited borders, including heraldry, animals, angels, saints, busts, and men or hybrids, in colours and gold (ff. 5r, 6r, 7v, 9v, 10r, 11r, 12r, 13r, 14r, 15r, 16r, 17r, 18r, 19r, 20r). Small miniatures in colours and gold, two with partial borders (ff. 7r, 8r, 9r). Large initials in colours and gold. Line fillers in colours and gold.
The artist of the principal miniature and additional later illustrations is believed to be John Siferwas, according to the signature on f. 4v. His name occurs in the Sherborne Missal (Additional 74236) with 'Illuminator'. Two other hands have also been identified as illuminators responsible for the borders (see Scott, Later Gothic Manuscripts (1996), II, pp. 63-4).
The coat of arms belonging to the Benedictine Abbey of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Glastonbury (f. 10r) suggests that the Lectionary was produced at the Abbey (Ibid., p. 64).
