Alexander Neckam (1157-1217), Corrogationes Promethei. Neckam was abbot of Cirencester and a scholar.
His work comprises a treatise on grammatical criticism (ff. 150r-157v) followed by a scriptural commentary (ff. 158r-196r).
Prohemium, rubric (f. 150r): 'Incipiunt corrogatio/nes Promethei. Prologus', incipit: 'Ferrum situ rubiginem ducit / et vitis non putata in labruscam sil/vescit', explicit: 'patulumque morabimus orbem'; rubric 'triuii gramatica sit / ars.
Capitulum .i., incipit: 'Excellentissimo philosopho platoni visum / est gramaticam non esse censendam nomine artis', explicit: (f. 157v) 'Horatius in fine versus Deliret a/cumen';
rubric (f. 158r) 'Super Genesim correctiones', incipit: 'Post hec de singulis libris / bibliothece aliquat [sic] dictiones proferre libet in medium', expicit: 'iam / humanam naturam excellentiorem esse angelica. // Explicit tractatus'.
A few scribal marginal notabilia (ff. 150r-153v, 155) in red and two marginal notes (ff. 154r, 165r) in red cartouches.
Decoration:
Initials (2-3 line) alternately red or green with ascenders and descenders often extending into the margin or the space between the columns (descenders up to 16 lines). Guide letters to initials throughout. Headings in red, with guide wording in cursive script running along the lower edge. A few paragraph or sentence initials (ff. 150r, 152r-153v) touched in red.
