- Title:
- Medicina de quadrupedibus
- Scope & Content:
-
Medicina de quadrupedibus, imperfect. The text consists of the Old English translations (itemised below) of three separate Latin compilations that date from the 5th century. Other copies in Cotton MS Vitellius C. iii (ff. 75r-82v), Harley MS 6258B (ff. 44v-51r), and Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Hatton 76 (ff. 124v-130r). For the text see Cockayne 1864-1866, J. Delcourt, Medicina de Quadrupedibus: An Early Middle English Version, Anglistiche Forschungen, 40 (Heidelberg, 1914), De Vriend 1984. For the edition of the original Latin texts, see description of Harley MS 5294.
The text includes Old-English translations of:
- ff. 101v-104v: De taxone liber (circa 8 recipes); incipit 'SAG`A'Ð ÐÆT EGYPta / cyning Idpartus wæs haten / Octaviano', explicit: ' þry dagas sona he bið ge/beted';
- ff. 104v-106v: De moro (4 recipes). A treatise on the healing powers of the mulberry. Incipit: blodes flewsan / þonne eallum mannum sy / seofontyne nihta eald mona æfter sunnan setl / gange', explicit: 'þonne / bið heo geclænsod'.
- ff. 106v-114v: Sextus Placitus (attr.), Liber medicinae ex animalibus (4 animals), imperfect. This copy of the short version (A-version) of the treatise is highly imperfect and deals with only four animals, however the composition of the gathering does not indicate the loss of any leaf. Marginal note in Latin 'de cervo' added later, incipit: 'Wið næd/ran slite heortes horn ha/fað', breaking off at 'on gesmyred hraðe hyt gelac/nað'.
