The medical treatise compiled from various sources by Gariopontus or Guarimpotus (d. c. 1050), one of the first representantives of the medical school at Salerno. The work comprises seven books, the first five on human diseases discussed in 'a capite ad calcem' order, followed by two other books relating to fevers.
Rubric: 'Incipit liber passionarii', preface (f. 1r): 'Materia huius libri est theorica et pratica', incipit (f. 1v): 'Cephalea est / dolor capitis qui multum tempus / tenet', explicit (f. 143v): ' blando more diutissime (?) perfricando', rubric 'Liber Passio/narii finit nunc feliciter'.
The first edition printed in Lyon in 1526 attributed the work to Galen, but two editions published shortly afterwords in Basel in 1531 and 1536 assigned the text to Gariopontus. The division of books is as follows: (1) ff. 1v-16v, head; (2) ff. 17r-40v, chest and stomach; (3) ff. 40v-69r, abdomen and intestine; (4) ff. 69v-77v, limbs; (5) ff. 78r-108r, the whole body; (6) ff. 108v-131r, fevers; (7) ff. 131v-143v, fevers and other diseases. The books are divided into chapters, of which the headings are listed in the tables of contents at the beginning of each book.
Scribal marginal notabilia and additions, and marginal and interlinear glosses, corrections, notes, and recipes in Latin and French, and maniculae added by13th and 14th century hands, including the name of the author 'Garipoti' (f. 40v) at the beginning of Book 3.
Other copies of the text are Additional MS 21995, Royal MS 12 B. ix, Royal MS 12 C. xxiv, and Royal MS 12 E. xx (ff. 33r-113r).
Decoration:
7 large foliate initials in colours and gold (ff. 1v, 17r, 40v, 69v, 78r, 108v, 131v), one with a dragon (f. 17r). 1 initial in red with penwork decoration in blue (f. 1r). Numerous smaller initials in red or blue. Rubrics in red. Display script in brown ink for letters following 2 foliate initials (ff. 108v, 131v).
