53. Mr. Alford, a Minister, complains of Judge Anderson's severity to Preachers in the county of Lincoln, whom he suspects of Puritanism, 1596. The description of this document rests on the authority of an old indorsement in these words, "Mr. Alford a Mynyster complaynt of hard courses holden against hym;" but Mr. Strype, who has printed part of it in his Annals, Vol. IV. p. 264, has entitled it "A letter from a person unknown of the Clergy to a person of quatity, shewing the rigour of Judge Anderson towards the Clergy and Preachers of Lincolnshire when he went the assizes there: in charging them with Brownism.-Writ from Alford." It does not appear that the paper itself contains any evidence either of being written by a person named Alford, or from the town in Lincolnshire so called.
