96. An unsigned, and probably imperfect, letter to Lord Oxford from some person at Cambridge, giving an account of a Latin Bible in Bishop More's collection, printed at Paris by Ulric Gering, &c. with a supposed date of 1464, which on inspection turned out to have been fraudulently altered. fo. 101. It may be necessary to remark in this place, that Mr. Maittaire had been deceived by the false date of this copy, (see his Annales Typogr. tom. i. par. ii. p. 273.) and had misled Lord Oxford to seek for such a bible all over Europe. The real date is 1476, or nearly so, being thus expressed "Jam tribus undecimus lustris Francos Ludovicus Rexerat." In the Cambridge copy "tribus lustris" is altered to "semi lustrum". The compilers of all bibliographical works, when they meet with articles that exhibit early dates before unnoticed or unheard of, would do well to submit them to the inspection of persons whose judgement may be equal to their own, but whose eyes are better, before they venture to commit themselves.
