Scope & Content:

The text belongs to the α branch of the tradition. Rubric added by a later hand (f. 45r) 'De cervo', incipit: 'Ad omnes homines. Cervinum cornu habet vim omnes humo/res siccandi ', explicit (f. 49v) '['De elefante' rubric added by a later hand (f. 49v)]: … faciem suam fricaverit plagas mundabit'.

Other copies are Harley MS 1585 (ff. 58r-78v) and Harley MS 5294 (ff. 60r-62v; excerpts). Edited in Howald and Sigerist, Antonii Musae de herba vettonica liber (1927), pp. 233-86. The present copy is listed in L. Thorndike and P. Kibre, Catalogue of Incipits of Medieval Scientific Writings in Latin, The Mediaeval Academy of America Publication, 29 (London: The Mediaeval Academy of America, 1963; with supplements in 1965 and 1968), p. 202b; electronic edition (Ann Arbor, MI, 2000), no. 202B.

Followed by (ff. 49v-50r) additional texts relating to peppermint and earth-worms: rubric (f. 49v) 'De menta', incipit: 'Est suavi odore nascitur mortis / virtutem', explicit: 'cum aceto potatur sanum'; rubric added by a later hand (f. 50r) 'Ad lumbricos', incipit: 'Haec eadem potio et lumbricos rotundos necat', explicit: 'et effectu tuo et ea mihi prestes que fides a te / posco'.
