- Title:
- Galen, Commentary on Hippocrates’ Aphorismata
- Scope & Content:
- The Latin translation of the aphorisms by Hippocrates of Kos (460-375 BC), with the commentary traditionally attributed to the Greek physician and philosopher Galen (c. 130-200), also known as Claudius Galenus, who lived during the reign of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus (r. 193-211). The Latin translations of both Hippocrates' text and Galen's commentary are those made in the late 11th century from Arabic sources by Constantinus Africanus (Constantine the African) (c. 1020-1098/9), a Benedictine monk of African origin: see Kibre 1976, p. 260; Kibre 1985, p. 32; O'Boyle 1998, pp. 87-88.
Incipit (f. 2r): 'Vita brevis, ars longa, tempus acutum, experi/mentum timorosum, iudicium vero dificile', explicit: (f. 53r): 'Premissit aliquibus ... in qua / tolunt incensa'; commentary incipit (f. 2r): 'Plurimi interpretes huius libri in hoc inanime / concordati', explicit (f. 53v): 'in qua / tolunt incensa cuncti // Explicens amphorismos Y[pocratis] hec in fine scripsi ... falsa et non esse Ypocratica, confirmare / poterit'. A short note on the upper edge 'aiudico vobis'. The beginning of most particulae or books is marked by a marginal note added by a contemporary reader (ff. 9v, 24r, 33v, 41r, 48r). With glosses.
A copy of the original text and commentary in Greek is Harley MS 5611. For Galen's commentary see L. Thorndike and P. Kibre, Catalogue of Incipits of Medieval Scientific Writings in Latin, The Mediaeval Academy of America Publication, 29 (London, 1963; with supplements in 1965 and 1968), p. 575i, and its electronic version on CD-ROM (Ann Arbor, MI, 2000), no. 575I.
