- Title:
- Commentary on Galen's De interioribus
- Scope & Content:
-
An anonymous commentary on De locis affectis or De interioribus (as commonly entitled in medieval manuscripts), a treatise on differential diagnosis and pathology relating to internal medicine written at the end of his life (after 192) by the Greek physician and philosopher Galen (c. 130-200). The Latin translation of Galen's work used by the commentator is the anonymous translation from Arabic sources that enjoyed a wide dissemination in medieval manuscript tradition. Incipit (f. 56v): 'Medicorum non solum moder/ni etiam vero'; commentary incipit: 'Agnitam anathomie'. Text and commentary are written in a very cursive hand; both begin at the foot of the previous text, continue on ff. 57r-61v originally blank, on the lower margins of ff. 62r, 91v, and end on ff. 92r-93v, also originally blank.
Other copies of Galen's text are Royal MS 12 C. xv (ff. 86r-117v) and Harley MS 3748 (ff. 135v-168). For the Latin translation of Galen's text see L. Thorndike and P. Kibre, Catalogue of Incipits of Medieval Scientific Writings in Latin, The Mediaeval Academy of America Publication, 29 (London, 1963; with supplements in 1965 and 1968), p. 863a, and its electronic version on CD-ROM (Ann Arbor, MI, 2000), no. 863A, where it is attributed to Burgundio of Pisa; see also R. J. Durling, 'Corrigenda and Addenda to Diels' Galenica', I, Traditio, 23 (1967), 461-76 (pp. 466-67, no. 60a), and II, Traditio, 37 (1981), 373-81 (pp. 376-77, no. 60a). First printed at Venice on 27 Aug. 1490 by P. Pincius: for references to the edition, see item 2 above, and Richard J. Durling, 'A Chronological Census of Renaissance Editions and Translations of Galen', Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes 24 (1961), 230-305 (p. 286 no. 60). For the original Greek text, see K. G. Kühn, Claudii Galeni Opera Omnia,(Leipzig, 1821; repr. Hildesheim 1964) VIII, pp. 1-452.
