- Title:
- Galen, Commentary on Hippocrates' Prognostics (In Hippocratis Prognosticum Commentaria tria)
- Scope & Content:
-
The Latin paraphrase of Arabic origin of the work by Hippocrates of Kos (460-375 BC) relating to acute illnesses and their treatments, accompanied by the Latin translation of the Greek commentary by Galen (c. 130-200). Also added by a later reader on to the margins of the pages is the unabridged work of Hippocrates in the Latin translation probably made in the 12th century by Gerard of Cremona (c. 1114-1187), for which see O'Boyle 1998. Also to Gerard is possibly attributable the Latin version of Galen's commentary: see R. Lemay, 'Gerard of Cremona', Dictionary of Scientific Biography (New York, 1970-1980), Supp. I, p. 183, no. 52 [59].
Galen's paraphrase, incipit (f. 62r): 'Videtur mihi quod er [sic] melioribus rebus est ut utatur medicina / previsione', explicit: (f. 91v) 'si rexeris et discerneris / ea'; commentary incipit: 'Manifestum quod Ypocras', explicit (f. 92r): 'et in quibusdam / earum in die sexagesimo / Explicit commentum Galieni super pronostica ypocratis'. Original text by Hippocrates (added in the margin) incipit (f. 62r): 'Omnis qui medicine artis studio / seu gloria seu delectabilem amicorum / copiam consequi desiderat', explicit (f. 92r): 'sunt exposite // ordine preceptorum';
The beginning of each particula or book is marked by a marginal note of a contemporary reader (ff. 72v, 83v ). With glosses. For Hippocrates's text and commentary in Latin translation, see L. Thorndike and P. Kibre, Catalogue of Incipits of Medieval Scientific Writings in Latin, The Mediaeval Academy of America Publication, 29 (London, 1963; with supplements in 1965 and 1968), pp. 1001l, 1002b and 1694n; its electronic version, and its electronic version on CD-ROM (Ann Arbor, MI, 2000), nos. 1001L, 1002B and 1694N. First printed at Padua by Nicolaus Petri c. 1476: for references to the edition see Richard J. Durling, 'A Chronological Census of Renaissance Editions and Translations of Galen', Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes, 24 (1961), 230-305 (p. 295 no. 158a).
