- Title:
- Haly, Commentarium in Claudii Galeni Tegni
- Scope & Content:
-
The Latin version of a medical compendium written by the Greek physician and philosopher Galen (c. 130-200) with its commentary by Alī ibn Ridwān (d. 1061, 1068 or 1089), generally known as Commentum Haly. Galen's text follows the Latin version probably made in Southern Italy in the mid-12th century, possibly directly from the original Greek text, and often identified in the manuscript tradition as the Translatio antiqua: see Richard J. Durling, 'Lectiones Galenicae: Techne iatrike (Kühn, I, 305-412)', Classical Philology, 63 (1968), pp. 56-57; Per Gunnar Ottosson, Scholastic Medicine and Philosophy (Naples: Bibliopolis, 1984), pp. 24-25.
Haly's commentary was possibly translated from Arabic into Latin also in the 12th century by Gerard of Cremona (c. 1114-1187) or by another member of the school of Toledo.
Rubric 'Incipit commentum Haly super tegni Galieni'; prologue incipit (f. 94r): 'Intendimus edere sermonem', explicit: 'ser/mo noster est conveniens et non egrediens'; paraphrase of Galen's text, incipit (f. 94r): 'Galienus: In omnibus doctri/nis que secundum ordinem currunt', explicit (f. 140v) 'in rememoratione librorum suorum'; Haly's commentary incipit (f. 94r): 'Haly: Doctrina est actio doctoris', explicit (f. 140v): 'quod magis completum est. Explicit [cancelled] ', followed by a note by a later hand 'Explicit commentum Hali super tegni Galieni'; orriginal text added in the margin incipit (f. 94r): 'Tres sunt omnes doctrine que / ordine habentur', explicit (f. 140r): 'qualia determinabo orationem in eis'. The beginning of each particula or book is marked by a marginal note of a contemporary reader (ff. 94r, 97r, 118v). With glosses.
For the Latin translation of Galen's text see L. Thorndike and P. Kibre, Catalogue of Incipits of Medieval Scientific Writings in Latin, The Mediaeval Academy of America Publication, 29 (London, 1963; with supplements in 1965 and 1968), p. 1585, i and j, and its electronic version on CD-ROM (Ann Arbor, MI, 2000), nos. 1585I and 1585J, and O'Boyle 1998, pp. 92-93; for the Latin translation of the commentary, see L. Thorndike and P. Kibre, Catalogue of Incipits of Medieval Scientific Writings in Latin, The Mediaeval Academy of America Publication, 29 (London, 1963; with supplements in 1965 and 1968), p. 700j, and its electronic version on CD-ROM (Ann Arbor, MI, 2000), 700J. The Latin translations of both text and commentary were first printed at Padua by Nicolaus Petri c. 1476: for references to the edition see no. 2 (above), and Richard J. Durling, 'A Chronological Census of Renaissance Editions and Translations of Galen', Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes 24 (1961), 230-305 (p. 282 no. 8a). For the Greek text, see K. G. Kühn, Claudii Galeni Opera Omnia,(Leipzig, 1821; repr. Hildesheim 1964), I, pp. 305-415.
