- Title:
- Willelmus Peraldus, Summa de vitiis
- Scope & Content:
-
An extract from the Summa de vitiis composed by Willelmus Peraldus (d. 1261) in c. 1236. Rubric: 'Incipit capituli in libro de vitiis', incipit: 'Tractatus iste continet ix partes'.
The text is preceded by a set of four full-page prefatory images in tinted drawing:
f. 27r: A Dominican friar kneeling before Christ blessing;
ff. 27v-28r: A diagram of the seven vices represented as devils: Superbia (Pride), Invidia (Envy), Ira (Wrath), Accidia (Sloth), Avaricia (Covetousness), Gula (Gluttony), and Luxuria (Self-indulgence), each sub-divided, and countered on the facing page by doves representing the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, and a knight on horseback with the shield with inscriptions referring to the Trinity, crowned by an angel. The armour of the knight and the trappings of the horse are labelled with the names of virtues. The text has been associated with Alain de Lille (see Evans, 'An Illustrated Fragment' (1982), p. 16). An alternative potential source is the Compendium theologicae veritatis by Hugo Ripelinus, which features the vices in the same order as in the diagram.
f. 28v: A diagram of a 'cherub' with six wings, standing on a seven-headed beast. Six roundels are inscribed with the main topic of each wing, and the five feathers of each wing are inscribed with five sub-topics. This diagram is associated with the text De sex alis cherubim.
