Papers regarding the discontinuance on the working of the coal mine at Mergui, and the reports and operations of the several officers who had been employed upon the examination of coal beds. The correspondence deals with various issues relating to coal production, and includes the following reports and proceedings:

• accounts of the expenses incurred in the operation on the coal mine in Mergui Province from the commencement of the operations in November 1839 to the 1st November 1841 (pp.19-29)
• a list of localities where coal had been found in proximity to water carriage in the North East Frontier, in a letter from J McClelland, Secretary to the Coal Committee, dated April 1842 (pp.71-76)
• proceedings of meetings of the Coal Committee held on 4th July 1842 (pp.84-93), 9th August 1842 (pp.141-146), and 13th September 1842 (pp.180-188)
• a report on the progress made by Lieutenant Yule in his survey in the Cossiah [Cossyah] Hills, including a sketch map of the Plains of Sylhet (pp.94-99)
• a report on the means of transporting the coal found near Cherrapunji to the plains by Lieutenant Yule, with comments by Lieutenant Colonel Garstin, Superintending Engineer, Lower Provinces (pp.105-137)
• a report upon the coal seams of Arracan [Arakan] by Lieutenant Hutchinson, Madras Artillery, with related correspondence (pp.151-163)
