‘Sketch of a Plan’ [report] for a Botanical Garden on the Madras Establishment included with Letter dated 2 May 1800 Bangalore from Dr Benjamin Heyne to Lord Clive

Plan advises regarding: 1. the suitability of locations ‘for the purpose and relative to the Countries which will benefit from it’ including comments on soil quality and composition and climate – particularly of Mysore, population, recommends ‘a little hill’ to provide a variety of soil types, availability of water, 2. the extent (25-30 acres) and internal management (subdivisions: Botanical; Practical – medicinal and industrial plants – dying, manufacturing cloth, joinery, tanning, Economical – culinary vegetables; walks and hedges to divide these but allow air circulation, reservoirs for water) and 3. the external management (instructions for the recruitment of: a superintendent of scientific qualification and in good health and for his accommodation; one or two European gardeners; native ‘mastries’; ‘coolers’; an English writer [scribe] and canicoplies [native scribes]; peons to take care of the garden and workmen. Estimated cost for the first year including each salary and expenses). Alphanumeric codes on pages 1583-1584 may refer to a plan which is not included.
Letter mentions the time limits of Heyne’s present situation and his intention to send plans of the Garden in its present state and according to the principles in the accompanying plan.
Note at the end that Consultation on 30 May was attended by Lord Clive, William Petrie and Ernst William Fallofield, who approved the Minutes of the last Consultation.
