- Archibald Campbell Tait, Archbishop of Canterbury, Lambeth Palace, to the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury Secretary for India: has heard from the Bishop of Calcutta [Robert Milman] about his proposal to the India Office for an increase in the Indian Episcopate; no details given, but he knows the Bishop wants to obtain statutory powers for Indian Bishops to consecrate new bishops and form new sees. Would be grateful for any information Salisbury can give about likely response to the proposal. Increase of the episcopacy in India is felt by all churchmen as a pressing want.
