- Concurs in policy of non-interference in Asian politics – we should seek friendly relations with neighbours and encourage any efforts they make for development and security of trade; impolicy of dealing directly with such people shown by problems arising from Makran telegraph, but Mayo believes question of eastern boundary of Persia needs to be settled, and is preparing despatch on this subject; danger that Sher Ali might seek to recover parts of Sistan which Persia has recently taken or claimed, and that Khan of Kalat and his feudatories and Russia would become involved; in forthcoming meeting with Sher Ali will avoid any permanent engagement; he is grateful for subsidy paid him by Lawrence which probably put him on throne since it enabled him to pay his army; interview will show him British do not seek political influence in his kingdom and will show India and Asia that rumours he is Russian tool are nonsense; has refused request from Bombay Govt to increase subsidy to Kalat; subsidies should be avoided as much as possible; doubts usefulness of posting agent at Kalat.
