Does not trouble Wood with every report of disaffection he receives, but encloses one from Lt-Governor of North-Western Provinces; considers it right that everything affecting public mind should be monitored, but inexpedient that British should 'appear in the eyes of the natives fussy or frightened; case of missionary assaulted by native trooper; Elgin considers it would have been better to preach in a Church than in the streets, but matter must be handled cautiously; possibility of conferring Star of India on Shah of Persia, King of Siam, and Pasha of Egypt; Wood's suggestion of alternative candidates (Money, McLeod, or Muir) to Harington for membership of Council.
4 June. Has received anonymous letter regarding a scheme to murder him and his colleagues allegedly planned by King of Oudh.
