- [Refers to Elgin's letter of 9 October]; thinks additional judge for High Court unnecessary; likes to see Indian papers when based on some knowledge of events; question of contract law and sale of lands is between Englishmen and natives – 'I consider it to be my duty to protect the Native'; Canning's mistakes; attitudes of English community in India; opinion in England on side of natives; missionary influence; Wood supported all Canning's dealings with native princes and chiefs; Wood's alteration to sale of land measure is to protect native right from speedy confiscation; Calcutta English objection to redemption of land revenue is that its benefit is extended all over India to native cultivator 'for whom they do not care one single anna'; Maine could not come out sooner; Trevelyan is 'thoroughly impressed with the inexcusability of his conduct' [as Governor of Madras], a little boorish in manner and tiresome to do business with, 'but very satisfactory in the end and a glutton of work', and is briefing himself very carefully.
