- Title:
- Letter from Wood to Elgin
- Scope & Content:
- Hopes problem of levy of Sikhs for Ceylon will not deter them from enlisting in future; adverse comments on Rose; Lawrence's fear that Afghans not believe force at Lahore is simply for camp of exercise – Wood cannot see he has any good ground for this but he knows the country so well that his opinions are worth attending to; still thinks it important sometimes to have Madras or Bombay man on Governor-General's Council [cf Elgin's letter of 4 October (1)]; Wood's letter to Maine on Peacock's judgement in rent case (which Wood thinks quite wrong) intended for Elgin to see also; India Office will not comment on bills introduced into Legislative Council unless an important point of principle involved – it would not do to have committee of Wood's Council and a committee of Elgin's Council considering a bill simultaneously.
