- Acknowledges Lawrence's letters of 12, 15,17,18, and 20 September; transfer of Straits Settlements; Lawrence should leave questions of Persian Telegraph to Home Govt; regarding Raja of Mysore, there should be no problem in House of Commons as Lord Stanley concurs; is satisfied about Oudh; refers Lawrence to his letters to Maine on rent question; sorry for affair of 9th Cavalry – 'you will be rid of Rose in March, which will be a great blessing'; Col (Sir) W Baker (Member, Council of India) says military men would not like Wood's proposals for Indian high command; agrees with Lawrence's letter to Miss Nightingale and with Lawrence on holding key places in plains; has misgivings on Lawrence's proposed reduction of two regiments; lists various items of expense (e.g. Calcutta Museum, Tibet road) and states Lawrence is free reconsider such items even if sanctioned by Home Govt.
