- Several letters from Lawrence have arrived some of which relate to matters he will need to discuss with his Councillors; on rent and contract questions, refers Lawrence to his lengthy letters to Maine and Harington; McLeod's' letter on course he will pursue as Lt-Governor is all Wood could ask; any impression that Govt was aiming at conversion of natives by Govt action 'would not only lead to all possible temporal evils but would materially impede that progress of Christianity which is made by the exertions of the missionary bodies'; is in communication with General Assembly to find Scottish clergyman; agrees salt tax cannot be raised much, nor customs much reduced; present duty on saltpetre may endanger revenue from it; brief comment on awkwardness of continuing Income tax; brief comments on barracks and fortifications, and desire of Indian military mind to place large force of Europeans in hills 'there to wait till an insurrection has occupied a province or two and then to descend for a great campaign'; Mansfield is aware of need to work harmoniously with Governor-General.
