- Discusses Oudh tenures at length; does not believe Canning intended, when re-establishing taluqdar aristocracy, to sacrifice rights of others; believes Lawrence could have rectified situation without giving so much appearance of upsetting Canning's policy; impresses on Lawrence 'very strongly indeed, the necessity of being moderate in your measures; believes taluqdars have claim for utmost indulgence of Govt 'without doing absolute injustice to others'; enquiries must avoid appearance of being intended to establish occupancy claims; advises Lawrence to convince Wingfield rather than overbear him – his influence in reconciling taluqdars will be valuable; Lord Stanley is to ask Parliamentary Question tonight – 'I shall try to put matters on their right footing, and counteract the effect of newpapers and pamphlets; but you must be cautious in your proceedings or you will create a very disagreeable feeling, and difficulties for yourself and for us, and for everybody'; assures Lawrence of his sincerity and goodwill.
