- His resignation [from 16 February], reasons for it, and regrets at ceasing to have part in administration of India; new Parliamentary Under Secretary, (Sir) James Stansfeld is a friend of Wood's; regrets at ending his partnership with Lawrence – 'we differed very on anything and it was a great satisfaction dealing with so honest and straightforward a person as you are. … I must assure you both of my undiminished regard for yourself and my undiminished interest in your Govt and in Indian affairs. I am going to the House of Lords and if I can ever render you or your Govt service you may be quite sure that I shall do so with very great pleasure; new recipients of K.S.I. include Frere and Mansfield because of importance that it should be worn by Englishmen in India as well as natives; has left recent correspondence with Lawrence for Lord de Grey to see.
