- Abyssinian expedition may necessitate recall of Parliament in November; risk that consequence of expedition may be to de-stabilise the country and thus encourage Egyptian interference; India will bear ordinary pay of troops, but all other costs of expedition will be borne by Home Govt; does not wish to threaten Persia; will support whatever Lawrence decides to do regarding Afghanistan; cannot agree with Lawrence and Council that Govt should hold shares in Bank of Bombay; Maj Gleig's case; concern that other railways may be in as bad state as Great Indian Peninsular Railway; Azim Jah (Prince of Arcot); urges Lawrence not to retire since some 'organic changes' in Indian administration likely to be discussed next year; hopes Lawrence will tell him if he has given offence; difficulty of bearing both English and Indian audiences in mind.
