- Lawrence will have heard of change of Government; looks forward to making Lawrence's acquaintance personally; will take an interest in Indian questions coming before House of Commons and hopes to talk over some of them; explains action taken on Lawrence's recommendations for Star of India. [Following the loss of the election Disraeli had resigned and Gladstone had been invited by the Queen on 4 December to form his first Ministry. The Duke of Argyll became Secretary of State for India on 9 December 1868; if he wrote any letters to Lawrence they do not survive in the Lawrence Collection].
