- Title:
- Letter from Lawrence to Wood
- Scope & Content:
- Acknowledges Wood's letters of 25 and 26 January; Lawrence's letter of 26 January will have given Wood his side of Oudh taluqdari question; denies he has ever been opposed to taluqdari tenure – 'what I am for is justice and fair dealing to all parties, to high and low, rich and poor'; further defends his policy in Oudh (noting in passing Wingfield's bias in favour of taludars); appreciates difficulty of Wood's postion and will do his best not to aggravate taluqdars but cannot recede from his position that where tenant rights do exist they should be maintained; believes Canning did not realise effect of his policy on tenant rights; encloses copy of Bengalee newspaper giving native view of his policy; planter interest unites with zamindari views on this matter - hence the hullabaloo 'but they do not and cannot disturb me from following that course which I know to be right'.
